'Choice' schools grow popular
Full Description:
Norita Gompers spends 45 minutes every morning and afternoon driving three children to and from three different schools.
The long commute is the result of a family decision: Like a growing number of parents, Gompers sends her children to public "schools of choice" that offer specialized curriculums and environments.
"I hope what I have done is guarantee their future," she said. "They're getting opportunities that I hope will give them an edge for the rest of their lives."
Locally and nationally, the options for parents have been expanding in recent years beyond private schools or even charter schools, which fall under the public-school umbrella but are operated independently.
